AAmericans will benefit from President Joe Biden rallying the world against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to invade his southwestern neighbor, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

The tense situation has been unfolding for months but worsened in recent days as Russia unilaterally recognized two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine in a move widely seen as paving the way for a wider invasion.

“I hope the American people who care, or care, will see that the President of the United States and his entire national security apparatus have rallied the world in standing up against Russia’s efforts to invade. and carve out a piece of another country for their own,” Psaki said on Tuesday. “The world stands with the United States against the actions of President Putin.”

The statement came in response to a reporter’s question about what the country should expect as the situation evolves. The United States has promised intense sanctions against Russia, some of which are being implemented, but has not committed to sending troops to defend Ukraine.

“We oppose this type of action,” PSAki added. “It dates back to World War II, and we have repeatedly throughout history been leaders around the world in rallying support for any effort to seize another country’s territory.”

But the effort will not be without costs, Psaki warned, which could include increased energy costs because Russia is a major oil exporter. She also said that every effort will be made to reduce the impact on the public.

“It’s about standing up for American values,” Psaki said. “[Biden] wanted to make Americans understand what impact this could have.”
